Another type of procedure that is becoming increasingly popular is eyelash transplants. An eyelash transplant involves removing a small strip of hair from the head (approximately a one inch strip which will heal with as less than 2mm scar) which is easily concealed with surrounding hair.
The hair is then dissected under a powerful microscope and the hair grafts are individually separated and prepared for transplanting into the eyelash region. An eyelash transplant takes approximately two hours to perform and the patient is placed under a mild oral sedative. The average eyelash transplant involves the addition of approximately 25-50 new hairs.
Once the new hairs are strategically placed, complimenting the natural angle of the originating eyelash hairs, the new hairs will continue to grow for life. Once transplanted, the new hairs will fall out within a few weeks, and then then be fully grown in, in approximately three to four months.
For the first three to four days following and eyelash transplant, tiny scabs will be present accompanied by redness and potential swelling. The patient can typically return to work and most normal activities the day following surgery and will look completely normal by the end of the first week, post-surgery.
There is very little risk involved with eyelash transplant surgery. The same associated risks involved with hair transplant surgery (potential infection).
If you are considering eyelash transplant surgery, make sure you do your research and locate an experienced surgeon. Although there are many common dominators between eyelash transplant surgery and hair transplant surgery, there are artistic differences between the two and it’s best to find a surgeon that has performed a decent handful of eyelash surgeries and has proven results, as opposed to a hair transplant surgeon who has yet to perform eyelash transplant surgery.
