Women, just like men, experience degrees of hair loss. The causes for hair loss in women though, differ from the causes of hair loss in men. Although, there are some causes for hair loss that both men and women do share, such as stress, medical conditions and reactions to medications.
One of the main causes for hair loss in men is the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). DHT is the primary contributing factor in male pattern baldness. Women’s hair loss is much more complex and DHT could be one of many factors for hair loss in women.
There is still a great deal to learn about women’s hair loss and hair loss in women is still largely misunderstood. There is evidence that many types of enzymes as well as hormone receptors and blockers, may be at work in women.
The female balding pattern varies from male pattern baldness. In females, typically the balding will occur around the whole top of the head. Whereas in men, the hair loss pattern usually occurs on the temples, the hairline and the crown.
Another difference is while men experiencing hair loss is almost always a result of a genetic predisposition (coupled with age), with women, balding could happen at any time.
The good news is women, just like men, are able to have hair transplants. With women though, they have to choose their hair transplant surgeon more wisely than men (although, both men and women should take their time and do their research to find a qualified hair transplant surgeon), as many hair transplant surgeons don’t perform hair transplants on women as the degree of artistic skill required, is much higher when performing hair transplants on women.
