10 Steps to Better Hair Health

The following techniques help both to rejuvenate damaged hair and to provide alternatives to common hair-damaging styling techniques. Taking action before hair loss becomes too severe can help reduce the severity of the hair loss and lessen the likelihood that you will ever need hair transplants.

1.    Leave-in conditioner can be sprayed directly onto wet hair prior to using a comb. Brushing hair, particularly longer hair, often involves getting snagged in tangles. This struggle can break already damaged hair or pull out otherwise healthy hair. Use a wide tooth comb to detangle wet hair.

2.    Since some hair problems are indicative of a diet lacking in calories, protein, and minerals, potential patients should consider changing their eating habits as a way to improve hair health. Choosing lean proteins, either meat or plant based, is a step in the right direction.

3.    To cut down on damage from using a blow dryer, let your hair dry naturally or use a towel. This technique reduces the amount of time required to dry hair using a blow dryer. Excessive blow dryer use strips moisture from the hair and scalp. Choosing a lower setting may also help prevent damage. Use a round brush to style while blow drying to create volume.

4.    As hair thinning progresses, consider getting a new style of haircut. Shorter haircuts, especially, tend to minimize the impact of thinning on your overall appearance.

5.    Get regular haircuts to remove dead ends. Dry split ends do not effectively add to length, and just make hair appear unhealthy.

6.    Rub your scalp to stimulate circulation as a way to help regenerate hair growth. Use your fingertips to massage the roots and do so briskly and in all directions. A few treatments of this will result in the presence of natural oil that will improve the appearance and health of your hair.

7.    Avoid hair extensions, as they cause damage to your real hair.

8.    Improving overall health can be reflected in hair health. For example, flaxseed or flaxseed oil helps hair to grow faster and gives it shine.

9.    Use a low or no-ammonia hair color, or henna if it’s available, when you color your hair. Chemicals can damage both the hair and the scalp and should be avoided.

10.    Use a deep conditioner once per week. Hot oil and three-minute deep conditioners are good products to use as a deep conditioner.
